Nuclear weapons threaten world peace and American national security. If we continue to produce them, an increasing number of countries will acquire them, and they may soon fall into the hands of terrorists.

The United States has agreed to cut down its supply of nuclear weapons, by adopting the START treaty. But the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) has announced an increase in funding for the nuclear weapons plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

During our country's worst budget crisis since the Great Depression, a new $6.5 billion uranium processing facility, sized to produce 80 warheads a year, will be built there if the NNSA is not stopped.

We, the undersigned, are alarmed about the intentions of our government and see a major discrepancy between signing the START treaty and going forward with continued nuclear weapons development.

We encourage Senators Jim Webb, Mark Warner, Lamar Alexander, and Bob Corker, and Congressmen Morgan Griffith and Phil Roe to assi! st in making the United States a leader in banning all nuclear weapons and reaching the goal of a nuclear free world.

The future of the planet and the wellbeing of present and future generations depend on reaching this goal.
