On Wednesday, July 15, at 6:30 p.m. APEC will be showing a shocking documentary by Bill Moyers, entitled Buying the War. The film, which is free and open to the public, will be shown at the Washington County Library, located at 205 Oak Hill Street in Abingdon (telephone 276-676-6222). This documentary describes how the US media bought into all of the misinformation that justified the Iraq War and then sold it to the American public. As our country is now engaged in two wars, the history of how the media sells militarism continues to be relevant.
How did the mainstream press get it so wrong? How did the evidence disputing the existence of weapons of mass destruction and the link between Saddam Hussein to 9-11 continue to go largely unreported? How and why did the press buy the case for war, and what does it say about the role of journalists in helping the public sort out fact from propaganda? The film will be followed by a discussion.
